Montana bow season starts the first weekend in September, and runs through the 2nd week of October. This is a wonderful time to be in the high country, with mild days and cold frosty nights. Due to our remote Wilderness location and very limited public pressure, the elk in our area are very vocal. The bull-cow ratio in our area is exceptional, boasting 30-40 bulls per 100 cows. This competitive environment obviously heightens the bugle activity. Most of our shots occur between 20 and 30 yards, although longer shots do present themselves. A screaming bull at 20 yards can unnerve even the most seasoned archer, making pre-season practice a must. Close range calling for large bulls is quite possibly the most exhilarating hunting experience on the planet. Shooting skills and physical conditioning play very important roles in hunter success.
